Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
